Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart. Using a hand held probe, some ultrasound gel and a portable machine, images are obtained that show the structure of your heart.

The scan takes between 20-30minutes where a range of videos and pictures are stored to show the full function of your heart.

All physiologists performing the echocardiogram are accredited with the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE).

The physiologist will explain what is going to happen and please refer to our information sheet at the bottom of this page for full details.

You are free to bring a relative/friend with you to accompany you during the test but please make sure you are comfortable with them being there.

Indications for the test may include :-

Extra heart sounds when using a stethoscope (Heart murmurs)

Breathlessness at rest or on exercise (Congestive heart disease)

Chest discomfort on exertion (Angina)

Feeling abnormal heart beats (Palpitations)

Abnormal ECG or chest x-ray

The scan will be reported and securely sent back to the referrer. The report will outline highly technical information relating to the pumping function of the heart, the function of the valves and any other information that helps to answer the questions asked.

Where necessary, recommendations may be given in line with published guidelines to assist with further management.
